Lactose
Definition
The disaccharide in milk. Made of glucose and galactose.
In the body
Broken down by the enzyme lactase in the small intestine. Without enough enzyme it ferments in the colon, causing gas and diarrhea (lactose intolerance).
Watch out for
Lactose intolerance is common among adults in many populations. Lactose-free products and fermented dairy (yogurt, cheese) contain little lactose.
