Definition

Sugar substitutes such as erythritol (0.2 kcal/g), xylitol and maltitol (about 2.4 kcal/g).

In the body

Only partly absorbed in the small intestine, so they raise blood sugar less. Erythritol mostly leaves in the urine.

Watch out for

Maltitol and sorbitol cause diarrhea in large amounts. A sugar-free label still leaves the calories of sugar alcohols.
