Definition
Polyunsaturated fatty acids found in oily fish (EPA, DHA) and in perilla oil, flaxseed and walnuts (alpha-linolenic acid).
In the body
Lowers triglycerides and takes part in regulating inflammation and in brain and retina function. Only a small share of plant ALA converts to EPA and DHA.
Watch out for
High-dose supplements can increase bleeding tendency; check with a clinician if you take anticoagulants.
