곰팡이와 세균을 막는 보존료

계열이다. 흡수된 뒤 간에서 분해돼 소변으로 나간다. 이 계열은 약한 여성호르몬 흉내를 낼 수 있다는 보고가 있어 화장품에서 크게 논란이 됐다.

식품에서는 간장 등 일부에만, 화장품보다 훨씬 좁은 범위로 쓴다.
