Definition
Carbohydrate that human digestive enzymes cannot break down. Soluble (oats, beans, fruit) or insoluble (whole grains, vegetable skins).
In the body
Soluble fiber slows rises in blood sugar and cholesterol and feeds gut bacteria. Insoluble fiber adds bulk to stool.
Watch out for
A sudden increase can cause gas and bloating. Add it gradually, with water.
