Reading the label

421 products say "sugar-free" — 244 of them do not read 0 sugars

Not a lie. It just counts something narrower than you think.

September 5 · From MFDS label text

We counted every product with "sugar-free" or "no added sugar" in its name. 421 of them. 244 carry more than 0.5 g of sugars per 100 g — about 6 in every ten.

The highest reads 85.83 g — 86% of 100 g is sugars.

The label is not wrong. "Sugar-free" means no sugar was added; sugars already in the ingredients, and things like allulose or corn syrup, stay where they are. Read the sugars line on the back, not the claim on the front.

One thing matters where you choose. Re-sort the same shelf by least sugar and the order changes.
